Presented for the first time in stereo sound

If you had AM easy listening radio inflicted on you in the 1980s, this song would be familiar to you. John Rowles, born in 1947, must surely be one of New Zealand's most significant musical exports. If I Only Had Time, released in 1968, has poignant and powerful lyrics.

I thought it was daggy when I was a kid. Listening to it again as an adult, I appreciate it more.

In these troubled times, one gets nostalgic for simpler days. On this day in April 1980, Split Enz's single, I Got You held the number 1 position on radio station 3XY's top 40 singles chart. The single was the band's most commercially successful single.

This week in August 1982 the number 12 song on Melbourne radio station's Top 40 chart was Six Months in a Leaky Boat by Split Enz.

Split Enz were one of the most popular New Zealand bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This was a former Australian number two hit. It was also released in the United Kingdom, but discouraged from airplay on the BBC. The story is that it was thought that a song with lyrics about a "leaky boat" would be insensitive to military morale during the Falklands War, which was being fought at the time.
