Federal Liberal MP, Andrew Hastie, is Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. He is also a prominent critic of China's human rights record and its attempts to influence Australian politics. The Victorian government's decision to join China's Belt and Road initiative is also cause for concern. We know nothing about the conditions of this deal.
It wouldn't surprise me if it was more favourable for China than the state of Victoria. What kinds of infrastructure projects will Chinese companies build in Victoria? Will the terms be more favourable to China than Victoria? It is also questionable to ask how many local jobs will be created by these projects, or if they will be built by a large number of Chinese workers at the expense of locals.
