Where's the authoritarian?

From Gerard Henderson's Media Watchdog blog, a commentary of the week's news. And so it came to pass that Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, made his first official visit to the White House to meet President Donald Trump. Somewhat predictably, news commentators such as Peter Hartcher, ran with the line that Trump is an authoritarian, and this a few days after the No Kings rallies across the United States:

"...Trump doesn’t believe in democracy. What we see here is an authoritarian leader trying to consolidate power as an authoritarian..."

As Henderson rightly points out,  Hartcher sounded like an American leftist running a “No Kings” message – despite the fact that the Trump administration cannot get its budget through the United States Congress. A real King would have no such problem.

The bad orange man

My former fellow librarians in the Northern Hemisphere aren't too happy in Donald Trump's America. They have responded by becoming more overtly politicised then they were before Trump returned to office in January 2025.

Vranyo

Some thoughts on the Russia-Ukraine War, in light of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's ill-fated meeting with American President Donald Trump.

Very few self-styled experts on this situation, which proliferate in the alternative media these days, are saying anything about malevolent state actors like Russia. How many people naively thought that Russia would become a viable democracy after the collapse of the USSR in 1991? That will never happen now.

These experts give Russia and President Vladimir Putin a free pass, but seem very concerned about corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy’s corruption, suppression of civil liberties, and its neo Nazism. They conveniently ignore that under Putin's 25 year rule, corruption, fascism, and suppression of individual freedoms are all massive problems in Russia. Freedom House, a think tank that monitors levels of freedom in countries around the world, rated Russia as not free in its 2024 annual report.

If social media was a thing during the Second World War, there would be plenty of people unwittingly parroting Axis propaganda, like the radio propagandists Lord Haw-Haw, or Axis Sally.

The point is that those who pile on Zelenskyy, but condone Putin’s actions, like to make out that they are free thinkers, immune to brainwashing by what they see as the completely untrustworthy mainstream media.

It pays to check the sources of the material you post, such as memes, articles, or videos. Who is the original author, and is it credible information? Someone with the time and inclination could do this work, tracing it to its original source. What if it was shown that they were uncritically and unwittingly parroting Kremlin propaganda? The Kremlin has a sophisticated online propaganda factory. It has the ability to underhandedly influence Western public opinion on the war.

In the Second World War, the Axis powers paid people to spread propaganda for them. Now, Putin’s regime can use social media to instantly and rapidly spread its propaganda to millions of people around the world. Investigative journalists have looked into this, such as Shannon Bond of NPR. Her work, without access to intelligence agencies, who would be right across all this, would only scratch the surface of what Russia is doing. International relations think tanks, such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies, are also monitoring this activity.

How about that, huh?

Regardless of your politics, you would have to be cold hearted to fail to be even slightly moved by this video of American Vice President JD Vance's first visit to the Oval Office. A guy with his dysfunctional upbringing, candidly described in his best selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, must have scarcely imagined that he would eventually rise to this position.

Losing a loved one, or an acrimonious relationship breakup warrants this kind of reaction; not an election result.

What it all comes down to

Donald Trump wants to be President again so he can pardon himself and his cronies for their alleged illegal activities. In other words, he's not in it for his supporters, but for himself. Is he capable of altruism?

Pack it in and go home

Some analysis from Keith Naughton on the 2024 American Republican primaries, and Donald Trump's prospects, ahead of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis's imminent formal announcement of his candidacy. It is possible, though perhaps unlikely, that Donald Trump will drop out of the campaign because of his mounting legal troubles. I wish he would. Naughton politely describes Trump as obstinate. Obstinate is a synonym for stubborn.

Let the sunshine in

As a dispassionate observer of American politics, I just finished listening to the audiobook edition of The Courage to Be Free: Florida's Blueprint for America's Revival, by Florida Governor, and as yet undeclared 2024 Presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis.

It certainly reads like a campaign biography, recounting his life story, his taking on cultural elites, woke corporations and the news media, and managing to keep his state out of lockdown when the Covid 19 pandemic was at its height. Some of this record may resonate with potential voters. While he seems to be a solid conservative, and a staunch family man, unlike his likely main rival in the primaries, it will fall to other biographers and commentators to assess his character.

It was a good decision to have a professional voiceover artist narrate most of the book. DeSantis sounded flat and monotone in the dedication, epigraph, and closing credits. He will need to develop his speaking skills if he wants to lift his poll numbers and be competitive in what will probably be a tough campaign, perhaps as bitterly fought as the 2016 campaign.

According to the most recent RealClearPolitics polling data for the 2024 Republican nomination, he is placed a distant second behind former President Donald Trump.

A hot take on the Trump indictment

The indictment of former American president Donald Trump was certainly historic. He is the first former President to face criminal charges.

Writing on his Substack, Steven Beschloss, the well known writer, journalist, and film maker, and brother of the prominent historian, Michael Beschloss, is not celebrating; rather, he sees it as  a sad occasion, not only because a former president has been indicted, but also:

"that he was voted into office in 2016 despite his history of criminality—and that we spent the following four years watching his shameless degradation of American justice, the rule of law and the presidency itself. While I am not in the mood to celebrate, I am nourished by this assertion of justice in which this man—no matter his station in life or the office he held—has been criminally indicted and now must attempt to defend his plea of innocence."

Trump has always come across to me as volatile. While I was glad that he defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, I was concerned that he would do something self destructive during his presidency, just like Nixon before him, or that eventually, his past would come back to haunt him. There was always the risk that his character, with highly credible allegations of womanizing, his well documented impulsive temperament, together with unanswered questions about his business ethics, would bring him undone. The constant conflict and polarisation he has brought to political discourse is also tiresome.

Even if these charges are a political hit job, Trump has brought it on himself by letting his long list of enemies exploit his weaknesses. He could have avoided it by being honest. Then, whatever mud was thrown at him would not stick.

Please read me

I read with interest the news reports of former US Vice President Mike Pence's speech to the Gridiron Club in Washington, DC, in which he mocked former President Trump for holding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home.

“I read that some of those classified documents they found at Mar-a-Lago were actually stuck in the president’s Bible," Mr Pence said. “Which proves he had absolutely no idea they were there.”

During his 2016 election campaign, when has was courting the evangelical vote, Trump claimed to have a deep love for the Bible, but when asked to elaborate on this by journalists, he gave vague and evasive answers. If mainstream media reportage of this issue is any indication, it appears doubtful that he has read that much of it. In a 2020 article in New York magazine, Ed Kilgore charted Trump's clumsy attempts to articulate coherent Christian beliefs.

By contrast, Pence, on the face of it, appears to be more sincere in his Christian beliefs. Every chapter of his memoir, and possible campaign biography, So Help Me God, which was published earlier this year, begins with a Bible verse.

For the Christian, Trump is a good example of how not to engage with the Bible. Christians should make it their life's work to master its contents. This means reading it carefully, understanding it, and correctly applying it to their life. Passages such as Acts 17:11 and 2 Timothy 2:15 are instructive here. If asked questions about the beliefs they claim to hold, we should be prepared to give convincing answers to anyone who asks. The Bible is to be treated with respect, and not used as a prop.

Fire and fury redux

To the surprise of absolutely no observer of American politics, Donald Trump today announced that he will be running for the Presidency again in 2024. Well may it be asked, what is motivating him. Ego? Vindication? Settling scores? To represent the hopes and aspirations of his supporter base? A combination of some or all of these things? Here we go again.

Grace and mercy

I am looking forward to reading, or to be more precise, listening to on Audible, So Help Me God, the autobiography of former United States Vice President, Mike Pence. Pence and President Trump famously fell out when Pence did not overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election, which to this day, Trump stubbornly asserts was stolen from him.

It is widely speculated that Pence is positioning himself to run for the Presidency in 2024. The publisher's blurb hints at this, stating that Pence is open to accepting "the next challenge." These types of books are usually part of a candidates' campaign strategy. The BBC thinks it very likely that he will be one of the contenders, as will Trump. If so, former allies will become rivals. Trump will mercilessly attack him, just as he did to his opponents in 2016, which will add an interesting dynamic to the primary and caucus season.

Turn off the lights on your way out

As Donald Trump prepares to leave the office of President of the United States, he is no doubt working on his farewell address. One of only three one-term Presidents in the last forty years, it will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

This is Jimmy Carter's farewell address, given almost forty years ago to the day, but still timely in some respects in the present day. Somehow I doubt that Trump's address will be as measured and statesmanly as Carter's.

Blogging over breakfast

Even if Donald Trump loses the election, it would be a misreading of the results to assert that it is a repudiation of his party's policies.

A Biden (or possibly Harris) Administration will not be able to achieve very much. The legislative branch will remain gridlocked.

As someone who has affection for the United States and its people, it grieves me to see it so divided.

Kicking people when they're down

As reported on Channel 10's irreverent news and current affairs programme, The Project, President Trump and his wife Melania contracted Coronavirus. As has been well documented by media observers such as Gerard Henderson of the Sydney Institute, this programme frequently mocks any political figure who doesn't share the left wing worldview they relentlessly push. Naturally, its viewers join in the pile on on its Facebook page. See the number of laughing and thumbs up emoticons on its Facebook page. That is petty, and reminds me why I don't watch the show. I prefer more intelligent humour that doesn't rely on snarkiness for a cheap laugh, and a more mature analysis of the news.

Make America grate

According to American political scientist Helmut Norpoth, President Donald Trump is going to win a second term in a landslide in the November 2020 election. Norpoth has created the Primary Model, a statistical model which has accurately predicted the results of five out of six Presidential elections from 1996 to 2016. If this analysis is correct, this is a grim scenario for the American left, or indeed the left throughout the English-speaking world.

Ah, feel the tolerance

Earlier today it was announced that Robert Trump, younger brother of American President Donald Trump, had passed away, days after being hospitalised in New York.

Predictably, Trump's multitude of social media opponents used social media to start a "Wrong Trump" Twitter tag. In other words, they wished that Donald Trump had died instead of his brother.

The heated world of social media has been significant in spreading irrational hatred of and vitriol towards Trump from the radical left, commonly referred to by some commentators as Trump Derangement Syndrome. Such is their passion that they see fit to attack the man at every opportunity. It doesn't seem to occur to them that you can disagree with someone's politics without resorting to nauseating and immature personal attacks.

Worse than Lewinskygate?

The United States Congress began public impeachment hearings against American President Donald Trump this week. There is a good chance that he may be removed from office. This is a helpful guide that explains what he allegedly did wrong, and how the impeachment process works.
In a report on ABC TV's Planet America programme about the impeachment hearings, it used a news clip from an American cable news show, in which Representative John Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican, spoke in President Trump's defence. Unfortunately, as this photograph shows, Ratcliffe is erroneously identified as being a Democrat.

Teflon Don?

The prospect of impeachment is a serious matter for any American President. In 1974, Richard Nixon resigned before he was impeached. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached, but acquitted by the Senate. Now, Donald Trump faces the prospect of impeachment for alleged abuse of power in his dealings with Ukraine.

In the spirit of this irreverent tweet from Ryan Fournier, founder of the Students for Trump group, I would also like to blame Trump for giving the Soviet Union the atomic bomb, killing Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa, and giving the United States the NTSC television standard instead of PAL.

Fournier alludes to alleged improper conduct from Hillary Clinton in running the Clinton Foundation, in which funds raised for disaster relief for Haiti were improperly handled, Russia bribing the Clinton Foundation to obtain a favourable uranium deal, and in her capacity as Secretary of State during Barack Obama's first term as President. The email and Benghazi controversies dogged her during her unsuccessful 2016 Presidential election campaign.

It remains to be seen if Trump is guilty of abuse of power, or if Hillary Clinton actually did all of the things that Fournier accuses her of.
