Jumping the gun?

According to some video game industry analysts, because of the growth in cloud gaming, the next Sony Playstation and Microsoft Xbox will be the last specialised consoles released by either company. They predict that they will eventually be superseded by cloud enabled devices. Video games are a global industry. What this article does not take into account is that this will depend on adequate cloud computing infrastructure being available to support it.

According to research by the Gartner group, the uptake of cloud networks around the world is sporadic. The average lifespan of a games console is five years. It will be years before cloud computing is widespread enough to support cloud based video games devices on a global basis. In my view, these predictions are somewhat premature.
