Deep and meaningful

I recently ordered a copy of Little River Band's 1988 album, Monsoon, which finally arrived in the mail yesterday from Amazon. With cover artwork by fingerpainter made good Ken Done, this was the album that saw Glenn Shorrock rejoin the band as lead singer after a less than fruitful association with John Farnham. As we all know, after leaving Little River Band in 1986 and resuming his solo career, Farnham went on to bigger and better things.

These are the lyrics to one of the album tracks, Soul Searching. It describes someone who is looking for meaning in life, and despite coming very close, doesn't find it, and who knows that they've lost something, but they don't know what it is. In the end, they decide to resolve their questions by looking within themselves. This song explores spiritual themes, but not quite from a Biblical frame of reference. It almost reminds me of the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes, only without the satisfactory resolution that we find there, where the Teacher, believed to be King Solomon, after reflecting on his life, reaches the conclusion that life lived apart from God is meaningless. How right he was.

I'm looking for something,
can't find it anyplace,
it's there in the distance,
starin' me in the face,
right in front of me,
but it's way beyond my reach,
and I know that I must try to find it.

Doin' some soul searchin',
lookin' for myself,
soul searchin',
Lord, I need a little help,
soul searchin',
'cause time has slipped away,
there's a dream I left behind in better days.

The start of the story,
is not where it all began,
so many directions,
all of them a part of the plan,
I've heard too many voices,
sayin' "this is the way to be free",
but I know where I can find the answers.

Doin' some soul searchin',
lookin' for myself,
soul searchin',
Lord, I need a little help,
soul searchin',
'cause time has slipped away,
there's a dream I left behind in better days.

Feeling the changes,
there's something in the wind,
gonna try to discover,
life's romance again,
lookin' for a loser,
who tore it all apart,
gonna take another look inside my heart.

Doin' some soul searchin',
lookin' for myself,
soul searchin',
Lord, I need a little help,
soul searchin',
'cause time has slipped away,
there's a dream I left behind in better days.
